- Open the bonnet and look at the belt. With the engine off, inspect the ribbed side for cracks, missing chunks, fraying, or a shiny glazed surface. Any of these means the belt needs replacing.
- Check the tension. Press the longest exposed run of the belt with your thumb. It should deflect only about 1 cm (half an inch). If it feels slack or you can twist it more than about 90 degrees, tension is low.
