Learning how to rotate tyres is one of the highest-value maintenance jobs you can do yourself, because it costs almost nothing yet can add thousands of kilometres to the life of an expensive set of rubber. Moving each tyre to a new position at regular intervals evens out the uneven wear that every car develops, keeps grip balanced across all four corners, and protects your suspension and drivetrain from the vibration that mismatched tyres cause. Why tyre rotation matters

Tyres never wear evenly. The driven wheels put down power and scrub off tread faster, the front tyres take the brunt of braking and cornering loads, and small differences in wheel alignment mean each corner wears at its own rate. On a typical front-wheel-drive car, the front tyres can wear out roughly twice as fast as the rears.

Rotating tyres redistributes that wear so all four reach the tread-wear limit at about the same time. The practical benefits are real:

  • Longer tyre life — even wear can extend total tread life by 20 percent or more, saving you a full set every few years.
  • Balanced grip — matched tread depth front to rear keeps braking stable and reduces the risk of oversteer or understeer in the wet.
  • Smoother ride — you avoid the cupping and feathering that cause steering-wheel vibration.
  • A free inspection — every rotation is a chance to spot uneven wear, nails, sidewall damage or a seized brake caliper early.

Uneven wear is also a warning sign. If one tyre is scrubbing far faster than the others, the cause is often alignment or a worn suspension component rather than the tyre itself.

How often to rotate tyres

The widely accepted interval is every 10,000 to 12,000 km, or roughly every six months, whichever comes first. A convenient habit is to rotate at every second oil change so you never have to track it separately. Always check your owner's manual first, because some manufacturers specify shorter intervals or a particular pattern.

Rotate sooner than scheduled if you notice any of these:

  • A tread-depth difference of more than about 2/32 inch (1.5 mm) between front and rear.
  • Vibration through the steering wheel or seat at highway speed.
  • Visible cupping, feathering or one-sided wear.
  • Heavy towing, spirited driving or lots of stop-start city traffic, all of which accelerate wear.

Choosing the right tyre rotation pattern

The correct pattern depends on your drivetrain and, crucially, on whether your tyres are directional or a staggered (different front and rear sizes) fitment. Getting this wrong can actually hurt handling, so confirm your tyre type before you start.

A directional tyre has a tread that is designed to rotate in one direction, marked by an arrow or the word "rotation" on the sidewall. If you cross a directional tyre to the other side of the car it will spin backwards, killing wet grip and causing noise, so those tyres can only swap front to rear on the same side. What you will need

Gather your equipment before you lift the car. You do not need a workshop, but you do need the right kit to work safely:

  • A trolley jack or the car's scissor jack
  • Four axle stands (never work under a car held only by a jack)
  • A wheel brace or breaker bar
  • A torque wrench (essential for retightening correctly)
  • Wheel chocks
  • A tyre-pressure gauge and, ideally, a chalk marker

Expect the job to take 30 to 60 minutes the first time. If you would rather pay for it, a shop rotation typically costs USD 20 to 50, and it is often free when bundled with a service or a new tyre purchase.

How to rotate tyres step by step

Work on level ground with the handbrake on and the engine off. Follow these steps carefully.

  1. Chock the wheels that will stay on the ground, then mark each tyre with chalk (for example FL, FR, RL, RR) so you know where each one came from.
  2. Loosen the wheel nuts by a quarter to half a turn while the tyres are still on the ground. They are far easier to crack loose under load. Do not remove them yet.
  3. Lift the car at the manufacturer's jacking points and lower it onto axle stands. For a full rotation you need all four wheels off the ground, so use four stands rated for your vehicle's weight.
  4. Remove the wheels and set them next to the position they are moving to, following your chosen pattern from the table above.
  5. Inspect as you go. Check tread depth, look for nails or bulges, and glance at the brake pads and discs now that everything is exposed. Uneven wear across one tyre points to alignment or suspension issues.
  6. Refit the wheels in their new positions. Spin each nut on by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then snug them in a star or crisscross sequence — never in a circle.
  7. Lower the car until the tyres just touch the ground, then torque the nuts to the manufacturer's specification in that same star pattern. Most passenger cars call for 110 to 140 Nm (roughly 80 to 100 lb-ft), but always use your vehicle's figure.
  8. Set the pressures. Front and rear pressures often differ, so adjust each tyre to the placard value for its new position (found on the driver's door jamb).
  9. Re-torque after 80 to 150 km. Nuts can settle slightly after a rotation; a quick re-check prevents a loose wheel.

When not to rotate tyres

Rotation is not always the right move. Skip it or seek advice if:

  • Tread depths are already very different. Fitting a much more worn tyre to a driven axle, or to the front, can upset handling. On AWD cars especially, mismatched circumferences can strain the centre differential and transfer case.
  • You have directional and staggered tyres. As noted above, these physically cannot be rotated in the normal way.
  • A tyre is damaged. A tyre with a sidewall bulge, exposed cords or repeated slow leaks should be replaced, not relocated.
  • You spot a mechanical fault. Severe one-sided wear usually means the fix is alignment or a suspension part, not rotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rotate tyres myself without special tools?

Yes. The only items you truly need are a jack, four axle stands, a wheel brace and a torque wrench. The torque wrench is the one tool you should not skip, because under- or over-tightened nuts can lead to a warped brake disc or, worse, a wheel coming loose. Everything else is basic hand equipment most home mechanics already own.

Does rotating tyres affect wheel balancing or alignment?

Rotation does not change your alignment, and it does not unbalance a wheel — balancing lives in the tyre-and-rim assembly, which moves as a unit. That said, a rotation is a good moment to have balancing checked if you have noticed vibration, and it will reveal alignment problems through the wear patterns you inspect while the wheels are off.

Should I rotate a full-size spare into the mix?

Only if it is a matching full-size tyre and your owner's manual approves a five-tyre rotation. Including the spare keeps all five wearing evenly, which is useful on trucks and off-roaders. Never rotate a temporary "space-saver" spare into service — it is speed- and distance-limited and not designed for normal driving.
