  • Damaged reluctor (tone) ring — the toothed ring the sensor reads can rust, crack, or lose teeth, giving an erratic signal that mimics a bad sensor.
  • Low brake fluid or air in the system — can trigger both ABS and brake lights.
  • Blown fuse or corroded connector — moisture in a wheel-arch plug is a frequent culprit on older cars.
  • Failed ABS module or pump — the electronic control unit or its internal solenoids fail. Less common but more expensive.
  • Worn wheel bearing — excessive play moves the sensor away from the tone ring, corrupting the reading.

On higher-mileage vehicles past roughly 150,000 km (about 90,000 miles), sensor and connector corrosion becomes far more likely, while module failures tend to appear later and are often preceded by intermittent lights that come and go with temperature.

  1. Restart the car. Sometimes a momentary glitch sets the light. If it clears and never returns, note it but do not ignore a repeat.

Can you keep driving with the ABS light on?

In most cases, yes — carefully and not indefinitely. With ABS disabled, your brakes work normally under gentle use, but in an emergency stop or on a wet, gravelled, or icy surface the wheels can lock and you may lose steering control. Adjust your driving accordingly:

  • Leave a larger following gap than usual.
